SOLDIER HILL GOLF COURSE
🇺🇸 Emerson, NJ, USA
Designed by Alec Ternyei
Soldier Hill Golf Course sits in Emerson, a borough in Bergen County in northeastern New Jersey, where suburban development meets the rolling terrain characteristic of the region's glacial landscape. The course was designed by Alec Ternyei, a architect who worked primarily in the mid-Atlantic states during the mid-twentieth century, creating layouts for municipal and daily-fee facilities that emphasized playability and efficient use of available land.
The routing at Soldier Hill reflects the topography common to this part of Bergen County, where modest elevation changes and wooded corridors shape the playing corridors. Courses in this area typically navigate through a mix of hardwood stands and open fairways, with natural drainage patterns influencing hole design. Ternyei's work generally favored straightforward strategic choices suited to recreational golfers, with greens and bunkering that reward accuracy without demanding excessive length.
As a public facility in a densely populated suburban area, Soldier Hill serves the northern New Jersey golfing community, providing accessible play within a region that includes numerous private clubs and municipal courses. The course operates within the constraints typical of its setting, where residential proximity and land availability shape both maintenance practices and the overall golfing experience. For golfers in Bergen County and the surrounding areas, Soldier Hill represents the kind of neighborhood course that anchors local play, offering a familiar layout where regulars return throughout the season.
Reviews
Just a typical public layout with no thought. Tee shots are very difficult because of the narrow fairways. Greens were in surprisingly great shape, but rough around greens had no grass.
Greens are better than expected, but just about everything else let me down. The tee shots are so quirky and require less club or a significant shot shape on almost every hole. Otherwise it’s a decent challenge and could be fun, but the tee shots and conditions are dissapointing
