SMOKY MOUNTAIN COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Whittier, NC, USA
Designed by Thomas Walker

Smoky Mountain Country Club, nestled in the heart of the North Carolina mountains, whispers tales of a bygone era, harking back to a time when the game was as much about communion with nature as it was about competition. The club itself represents a return to simpler times, a place where local pride and a welcoming spirit outweigh any pretense.
The course, owing much to its natural setting, plays as a mountain-style layout. Carved from the rugged terrain near Whittier, it favors strategic play over brute force. Fairways tighten and widen unexpectedly, and approaches often require a deft touch to navigate the undulating greens. The course is not known for punishing length but rather its ability to challenge golfers with uneven lies, blind shots, and strategically placed bunkers.
The club's unpretentious atmosphere extends to its membership, largely comprised of locals and regional enthusiasts who relish the relaxed pace and camaraderie. One notable feature often cited by members is the legendary fried chicken served at the clubhouse – a simple, yet cherished, tradition that underscores the club's down-to-earth appeal. Smoky Mountain Country Club is not seeking accolades or recognition beyond its region; it finds its satisfaction in serving its tight knit community, a place where the essence of the game remains pure.
Reviews
Cool course in the mountains of western Carolina. Lots of elevation changes and fun downhill shots at greens. Greens weren’t in the best condition and driving range was a sand pit but good enough for pre round warmup. Hotdog was fine but I’ve had better at other courses. Other food items I didn’t get looked good though
