HORSESHOE BAY RESORT
🇺🇸 Horseshoe Bay, TX, USA
Designed by Robert Trent Jones

Slick Rock, nestled in the heart of Texas Hill Country’s Horseshoe Bay Resort, earns its name from the pink granite outcroppings that punctuate its landscape, a visual signature as bold as the challenges it presents. This Robert Trent Jones, Sr. design, a product of the early 1970s, utilizes the region's rolling terrain to full effect, featuring meandering Bermuda fairways guarded by mature oaks and cedars. The course is known for its subtle doglegs and the infamous “Million Dollar Hole” (#14), a par-5 where golfers navigate a granite waterfall.
Jones, Sr.’s design philosophy is evident in the generous landing areas, a counterpoint to the strategically placed bunkers that protect the undulating greens. This provides players with a sense of opportunity, while demanding a deft short game to score well. While not a major championship venue, Slick Rock maintains a loyal following among resort guests and local players drawn to its playability and scenic beauty.
The layout is a balanced test. The par-5s favor those who can move the ball left to right, while the par-3s require accuracy to avoid the rock features. Slick Rock rewards intelligent play with its risk reward layout.
Beyond the golf, the atmosphere at Slick Rock is as much a draw as the course itself. The club fosters a relaxed and welcoming environment, where post-round gatherings over Texas barbecue are as integral to the experience as the golf. It's a place where stories are shared, and the spirit of Hill Country hospitality is always in full swing.
