WORLD GOLF VILLAGE
🇺🇸 St. Augustine, FL, USA
Designed by Bobby Weed
The Slammer and Squire at World Golf Village in St. Augustine opened in 1998 as part of the World Golf Hall of Fame complex. Bobby Weed designed the course in collaboration with Sam Snead ("The Slammer") and Gene Sarazen ("The Squire"), two Hall of Fame members whose nicknames give the course its name. The layout reflects input from both legends during the design process, though Weed handled the architectural execution. The course serves as one of two championship layouts at the resort facility, alongside the King and Bear.
The routing moves through rolling terrain characteristic of northeast Florida, with elevation changes more pronounced than typical for the region. Natural wetlands, lakes, and mature pines frame many holes, and the design incorporates strategic bunkering and waste areas that require thoughtful course management. The layout measures over 7,000 yards from the championship tees and features wide fairways that accommodate various skill levels while still presenting challenge through green complexes and hazard placement.
World Golf Village was developed as a golf destination anchored by the Hall of Fame museum, and the Slammer and Squire functions as a public-access facility within that larger complex. The course has hosted various regional amateur and professional qualifying events over the years. Its location near historic St. Augustine places it within a concentrated golf market along Florida's First Coast, and the Hall of Fame connection gives it a distinct identity among area courses.
Reviews
The Slammer & Squire is definitely the easier of the two courses in the World Gold Village but still a great track. I’ve had the opportunity to play it on several occasions and each time it’s been in excellent condition. The course is a lot of fun to play for every level of golfer. The back nine is very open and plenty of opportunities to score. I’ve never stayed on site but I’ve heard it’s very nice. St. Augustine is not too far away and has plenty of great options for food and things to do.
Very welcoming course with lots of wide open fairways. Not too difficult and usually in good shape, fun Par 3s and Par 5s
