Skytop Lodge sits on a 5,500-acre estate in the Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania, about ninety miles west of New York City. The golf course was designed by Robert White, a Scottish-born professional who served as the first president of the PGA of America and worked as head professional at Ravisloe Country Club near Chicago before turning to course design. White completed the layout at Skytop in 1928, routing eighteen holes through rolling woodland terrain characteristic of the Poconos.
The course occupies elevated ground with natural changes in elevation, playing through corridors of hardwood and conifer forest. The routing takes advantage of the property's topography, with several holes offering views across the surrounding mountains. The design reflects the strategic principles common to courses built in the late 1920s, with relatively open fairways framed by trees and greens that reward accurate approach play. Water comes into play on a few holes, and the natural rock outcroppings typical of the region appear throughout the property.
Skytop Lodge operates as a traditional mountain resort with a focus on family recreation and outdoor activities. The golf course serves primarily resort guests and members, maintaining a pace and atmosphere suited to its setting. The main lodge building, completed in 1928 in Dutch Colonial Revival style, anchors the property and houses dining rooms that emphasize regional American cuisine. The course remains a central amenity within the broader resort experience that includes hiking, fishing, and seasonal activities across the estate's extensive acreage.
