SILVER SPRINGS GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB
🇨🇦 Calgary, Alberta, CA
Designed by Dick Phelps
Silver Springs Golf & Country Club sits in the northwest quadrant of Calgary, occupying rolling terrain along the Bow River valley. Dick Phelps designed the course in the early 1960s during a period of suburban expansion in the city, and the layout reflects the era's emphasis on strategic tree-lined corridors and elevation change. The property takes advantage of natural contours, with several holes playing uphill or downhill and offering views across the valley toward the Rocky Mountain foothills to the west.
The routing moves through mature parkland, with spruce and poplar trees framing many fairways. Phelps incorporated the site's natural movement into the design, creating holes that require thoughtful club selection and course management rather than overwhelming length. Greens are typically mid-sized and moderately contoured, defended by bunkers that reward accurate approach play. Water comes into play on a handful of holes, adding variety to the challenge.
Silver Springs has served as a neighborhood club for decades, with a membership drawn largely from the surrounding residential areas. The club maintains a family-oriented atmosphere and hosts regular member competitions and junior programs. The course remains a fixture in Calgary's golf community, offering a traditional parkland experience within the city limits. Its mature tree canopy and established turf give the layout a settled, classic character that contrasts with some of the newer developments in the region.
