SILLOTH ON SOLWAY GOLF CLUB
🏴 Silloth, Cumbria, England
Designed by Willie Park
Silloth on Solway occupies a remote stretch of Cumbria's Solway Coast, where the links land looks across the Solway Firth toward Scotland. Willie Park Jr. laid out the course in 1892, creating a traditional out-and-back routing over classic linksland characterized by rumpled fairways, natural undulations, and the firm turf typical of seaside courses in northwest England. The setting remains notably unspoiled, with views extending to the Scottish hills and the Lake District fells visible to the south on clear days.
The course runs along relatively flat terrain compared to some British links, but the ground contains enough movement and the wind off the Firth provides sufficient challenge to test all levels of play. The layout features several holes that play directly along the coast, while others turn inland through gorse and rough grasses. The greens are typically firm and subtly contoured, rewarding ground approaches and requiring careful reading.
Silloth has hosted regional amateur competitions and remains a fixture in the northwest England golf scene, though it operates well outside the major championship circuit. The club maintains a welcoming, unpretentious atmosphere that reflects its coastal village setting. For golfers seeking authentic links golf without the crowds or expense of more famous venues, Silloth offers a genuine test in a landscape that has changed little since Park's original design. The course represents a quieter chapter of British golf history, preserved by geography and a membership committed to traditional links character.
Reviews
one of the elite links courses on the west coast of mainland britain (of which fhere are many). I would rate silloth as close to the very top of the list based on quirk, natural character and uniqueness of the holes. In some ways it reminds me of Royal County Down, but on not quite as grand a scale, but for less than 20% of the green fee. It has to be the best value world class golf in the UK and I would rate it alongside or hifher than many of the World Top 100 courses in the UK.
