THE HILLS OF LAKEWAY
🇺🇸 Austin, TX, USA
Designed by Jack Nicklaus

The Signature Course at The Hills of Lakeway sits in the Texas Hill Country west of Austin, where the rolling limestone terrain and views of Lake Travis provide the setting for this Jack Nicklaus design. Opened in the mid-1980s as part of a residential golf community, the course reflects Nicklaus's approach to strategic design during that period, with emphasis on multiple tee options and risk-reward decision-making. The property's elevation changes and natural rock outcroppings shape the character of the routing.
The layout moves through the Hill Country landscape with holes that incorporate the region's characteristic live oak trees and limestone features. Several holes play along ridgelines or down toward lower elevations, creating variety in perspective and shot requirements. The greens typically feature Nicklaus's preference for contouring that rewards accurate approach play, and bunkers are positioned to define ideal angles of attack.
The Hills of Lakeway operates as a private club serving its residential community and members from the greater Austin area. The facility includes additional golf amenities and club services typical of an established Texas Hill Country development. The Signature Course represents one of several Nicklaus designs in the Austin region from this era, when the area saw significant golf course development tied to lakeside and hill country real estate.
Reviews
The Hills Country Club is a premier private golf destination. The greens were recently renovated and are currently playing on the firmer side. As they continue to mature, they’ll become faster, showcasing some truly fun and challenging green complexes. The club offers excellent practice facilities, including a spacious driving range, a well-maintained putting green, and a dedicated three-hole practice course for members. The Hills serves as the club’s signature course, while Flintrock Falls—located right next door—offers another outstanding test of golf. Both courses were masterfully designed by Jack Nicklaus.
