Short at RTJ Golf Trail at Magnolia Grove

The Short Course at Magnolia Grove is part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, a state-funded network of public golf facilities developed in the 1990s to promote tourism and recreation in Alabama. Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed the course with assistance from Roger Rulewich, who worked extensively on Trail projects during this period. Magnolia Grove, located in Mobile near the Gulf Coast, opened in 1992 as one of the Trail's original sites and features three distinct 18-hole layouts on the property.

The Short Course plays to a maximum of approximately 3,000 yards and serves as an accessible option for beginners, juniors, and players seeking a quicker round. Despite its abbreviated length, the routing incorporates Jones's characteristic design principles, including strategic bunkering, water hazards, and contoured greens that require thoughtful approach play. The course occupies relatively flat terrain typical of coastal Alabama, with native vegetation and wetland areas framing several holes.

Magnolia Grove's three courses—Crossings, Falls, and Short—share practice facilities and a clubhouse, creating a comprehensive public golf destination. The Short Course complements the two championship-length layouts by offering variety within the complex. The Trail's mission emphasizes affordability and accessibility, and the Short Course reflects this philosophy by providing a legitimate design experience at a reduced scale. The facility maintains the Trail's standard of conditioning and service while accommodating a broad range of skill levels and playing preferences.
