UNION LEAGUE NATIONAL GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Swainton, NJ, USA
Designed by Dana Fry, Michael Hurdzen

Union League National Golf Club's Sherman/Grant combination represents one of three nine-hole loops designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry on property in Cape May County's wooded interior. The course opened in the early 2000s as part of a private club development that takes its name and patriotic theming from Philadelphia's historic Union League, though the New Jersey facility operates as a separate golf-focused entity. The design team routed twenty-seven holes through rolling terrain characterized by mature hardwoods and natural sandy soils typical of southern New Jersey's coastal plain.
The Sherman and Grant nines share the architectural vocabulary common to Hurdzan-Fry collaborations from this period: strategic bunkering, green complexes with varied internal contours, and playing corridors that work with existing landforms rather than impose dramatic earthmoving. The routing takes advantage of elevation changes modest by regional standards, creating interest through angles of approach and green-site positioning. Several holes play through corridors framed by oak and pine, while others open to broader views across the property's natural clearings.
The club maintains a traditional private membership structure with an emphasis on golf rather than extensive resort amenities. The twenty-seven-hole configuration allows for varied daily rotations, with the Sherman/Grant pairing offering a representative experience of the design team's approach to working with New Jersey's Pine Barrens-adjacent landscape. Conditioning standards reflect the priorities of a golf-centered membership, and the course remains relatively quiet within the broader regional golf conversation despite its pedigree design credentials.
Reviews
Great experience but these greens are so wonky it’s almost unplayable. Am amazing course tee to green but I’d rather auto 3 putt than have to putt on these monstrosities.
Greens, while large, feel impossible at times and require strategic approach shots. Course was in immaculate shape otherwise. Would definitely want to play Meade over Sherman if I return.
