UNION LEAGUE NATIONAL GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Swainton, NJ, USA
Designed by Dana Fry, Michael Hurdzen

The Sherman course at Union League National Golf Club in Swainton, New Jersey, opened in 2007 as part of a two-course facility designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry. The club itself traces its origins to the Union League of Philadelphia, a civic organization founded during the Civil War era, and the golf facility represents the league's expansion into championship golf in southern New Jersey's Cape May County.
Hurdzan and Fry routed the Sherman course across gently rolling terrain characteristic of the coastal plain, incorporating natural sandy soils and native vegetation that recall the region's proximity to the Atlantic coast. The design emphasizes strategic options from the tee and thoughtful green complexes, with bunker placement that rewards precise approach shots. The course features wide fairway corridors in places while tightening at others, creating variety in how holes can be played depending on skill level and wind conditions.
The property benefits from the relatively open landscape of southern New Jersey, with views extending across the layout and minimal residential intrusion. Native grasses and preserved wetland areas frame several holes, giving the course a naturalistic appearance. The Sherman course shares the facility with the Freedom course, also by Hurdzan and Fry, allowing the club to host member play and competitive events across varied terrain. The club maintains a private membership structure connected to its Philadelphia institutional heritage.
Reviews
Fry and Straka definitely had some interesting thoughts when putting in some of the green complexes.
Awesome what Dana Fry and Jason Straka did here. The amount of earth that was moved has to be seen to be believed. Hard to wrap your head around that you’re in South Jersey.
