RTJ GOLF TRAIL AT CAMBRIAN RIDGE
🇺🇸 Greenville, AL, USA
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., Roger Rulewich

The Sherling Course is one of three 18-hole layouts at the RTJ Golf Trail's Cambrian Ridge facility in Greenville, Alabama. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. with Roger Rulewich and opened in the early 1990s as part of Alabama's ambitious public golf trail project, the course takes its name from the Sherling family, prominent local landowners. The 27-hole complex at Cambrian Ridge was later expanded to include the Sherling as a distinct third course, giving the facility 54 holes total alongside the Canyon and Loblolly nines.
Cambrian Ridge sits in the rolling terrain of south-central Alabama, where the property's natural elevation changes provide more dramatic topography than much of the surrounding coastal plain. Jones utilized these ridges and valleys to create bold, strategic holes with significant elevation shifts and forced carries. The design follows Jones's signature style: large, undulating greens; expansive bunkers; and multiple tee boxes that allow the course to play across a wide range of yardages. Water hazards appear on several holes, typical of the architect's emphasis on visual intimidation balanced by playable corridors for those who choose appropriate lines.
The Sherling Course shares the facility's character with its companion layouts—championship length, generous fairways for accurate drivers, and greens that demand precise approach work. The RTJ Golf Trail's mission to provide high-quality public golf at accessible rates makes Cambrian Ridge a regional destination, drawing golfers to experience Jones's design philosophy in a less-traveled corner of the state.
