NEMACOLIN WOODLANDS RESORT
🇺🇸 Farmington, PA, USA
Designed by Pete Dye
Shepherd's Rock, carved into the Allegheny Mountains of southwestern Pennsylvania, represents a bold statement in modern course design. The course eschews the gentle slopes typical of the region, instead presenting dramatic elevation changes and expansive vistas that test both skill and nerve. Long carries over natural ravines and strategically placed bunkers reward powerful, accurate tee shots, while undulating greens demand a deft touch with the putter. This is not a course for the faint of heart, but rather one that celebrates aggressive play and calculated risk.
Designed by Pete Dye protégé Tim Liddy, Shepherd's Rock opened in 2017 as a striking contrast to its sister course, the classic Mystic Rock. Liddy embraced the rugged terrain, crafting a layout that feels both natural and imposing. The course demands more than just length. It is a strategic test, requiring careful consideration of angles and wind conditions, often swirling unpredictably across the exposed mountaintop. While not steeped in decades of tournament lore, Shepherd's Rock quickly established itself as a formidable challenge and a visually stunning experience.
Beyond the demanding layout, Shepherd's Rock has become a favored destination for golfers seeking an escape from the everyday. The mountain air is clean, the views are breathtaking, and the overall atmosphere is one of refined relaxation. The clubhouse, with its panoramic windows and upscale amenities, serves as a welcoming haven after a challenging round.
Reviews
Fun, BIG, crazy, occasionally misguided — very Pete Dye. Has some great holes, some head scratchers, but overall positive and worth checking out at least once. Expansive, great views, well-manicured. That said, would I stay there to play it? Mehhh, nah.
