Shanqin Bay Course
Wanning, Hainan, CN

CITIC Shanqin Bay Golf Club occupies a dramatic coastal site in Wanning on Hainan Island's eastern shore, where the South China Sea meets rolling terrain that transitions from elevated ground to beachfront. Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw routed the course to take advantage of the natural topography and ocean views, working within a landscape that features both inland movement and several holes that play directly along the water. The design reflects the architects' characteristic minimalist approach, emphasizing ground contours and strategic options over manufactured features. The routing moves through varied terrain, with holes set among dunes and native grasses near the coast and others positioned on higher ground that provides expansive views across the bay. Several holes play close to the beach, where wind becomes a significant factor and the sandy soil and natural vegetation create a links-like character. The design incorporates wide fairways and large, contoured greens that reward creative shot-making and ground-game approaches, consistent with Coore and Crenshaw's philosophy of allowing multiple routes to the hole. Shanqin Bay represents one of the few Coore and Crenshaw designs in China and contributes to Hainan's growing reputation as a golf destination. The course serves both resort guests and members, taking advantage of the island's tropical climate and its position as a leisure destination in southern China. The combination of oceanfront property and the architects' restrained design approach distinguishes the course within the region's golf landscape.
