WINTERGREEN RESORT
🇺🇸 Wintergreen, VA, USA

Shamokin to Tuckahoe, nestled within Wintergreen Resort along State Route 664, is a tale of two nines, each whispering a different chapter of mountain golf history. The resort, conceived in the 1970s, boasts these dual nines that deliver a mountain golf experience of elevation changes, challenging play, and natural beauty, although it hasn't risen to the national prominence of some of its peers.
The original Shamokin nine, the older of the two, presents a parkland style marked by dense hardwood forests and dramatic elevation shifts. Its tight fairways, lined with towering oaks and maples, demand strategic shot placement, while undulating greens test putting prowess. In contrast, the Tuckahoe nine, added later, exhibits a more open character. Players will note its generous fairways and panoramic vistas of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. This nine is more forgiving off the tee but introduces intricate bunkering around the greens, requiring a deft touch on approach shots.
Ed Ault, a prolific designer of the mid-20th century, laid out the bones of Shamokin to Tuckahoe, skillfully utilizing the rugged terrain to craft a course that rewards thoughtful play over brute strength. The course, while not hosting major championships, is well-known within the local golf community as a friendly challenge to all skill types. It is a frequent site for amateur tournaments across the state of Virginia.
Beyond the golf, Wintergreen Resort is home to a community deeply rooted in the spirit of outdoor adventure. Members often recount tales of early morning tee times followed by afternoon hikes on the Appalachian Trail, or rounds concluding with sunset views from the mountaintop clubhouse. And, like any self respecting resort, the Halfway Cafe is known for its signature pulled pork sandwich, offering a taste of Southern comfort amidst the cool mountain air.
