Severn at Woodspring Golf and Country Club

The Severn Course at Woodspring Golf and Country Club occupies rolling parkland in Long Ashton, just southwest of Bristol in Somerset. Designed by Donald Steel, Peter Alliss, and Clive Clark, the course reflects the collaborative approach common to British golf architecture in the late twentieth century. Steel, known for his work on championship venues and course restorations across the UK, brought technical rigor to the routing, while Alliss—better known as a broadcaster but also an accomplished designer—contributed strategic thinking shaped by decades of competitive experience. Clive Clark, a tournament professional turned architect, added playing perspective to the design process.

The course makes use of the natural contours of the Somerset countryside, with elevation changes that provide variety in stance and shot-making demands. Mature trees frame many holes, and the layout incorporates water features that come into play on several holes. The design emphasizes accuracy over distance, rewarding players who can position their approach shots carefully rather than simply overpower the course. Bunkering is traditional in style, with hazards placed to challenge both tee shots and approaches.

Woodspring serves primarily as a members' club with facilities that include both the Severn Course and a shorter companion layout.
