RTJ GOLF TRAIL AT THE SHOALS
🇺🇸 Muscle Shoals, AL, USA
Designed by Roger Rulewich

The Schoolmaster course at RTJ Golf Trail at The Shoals is one of two championship layouts at this northwest Alabama facility, designed by Roger Rulewich and opened in the early 1990s as part of Robert Trent Jones Sr.'s ambitious Golf Trail project across the state. Rulewich, a longtime associate of Jones who worked on numerous Trail courses, created a design that reflects the Trail's signature characteristics: generous fairways, large undulating greens, strategic bunkering, and substantial water features that demand thoughtful course management.
The routing takes advantage of the rolling terrain characteristic of the Tennessee River Valley region, with elevation changes that provide variety and visual interest throughout the round. Several holes incorporate significant water hazards, including lakes and streams that come into play on approach shots and around greens. The bunkering style follows the Trail's aesthetic—bold, white sand complexes that frame landing areas and greenside approaches. The greens themselves are typically large with considerable internal contour, rewarding accurate approach play while penalizing poor position with challenging two- and three-putts.
The Shoals facility, which also includes the companion Fighting Joe course, sits in Muscle Shoals, an area known for its musical heritage and proximity to Wilson Dam on the Tennessee River. The courses serve both resort guests and local members, offering the accessible green fees and public access that define the RTJ Golf Trail's mission. The setting provides a parkland character with mature trees and open vistas across the northwest Alabama landscape.
