SAPONA COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Lexington, NC, USA
Designed by Ed Seay, Ellis Maples

Sapona, carved from the heart of North Carolina's Piedmont region, is a test of golf that rewards strategic play more than sheer power. The original design, a product of Ellis Maples' early work, meanders through rolling hills dotted with hardwoods and tall pines, presenting golfers with doglegs and subtly contoured greens that demand creativity and respect. While not nationally prominent, Sapona holds a cherished place in the local golfing community, offering a classic, unpretentious experience.
The course favors players who can shape their shots, with several holes requiring precise approaches into well-guarded greens. Local lore recalls many a weekend Nassau decided on the challenging par-4 18th, where a demanding approach over water can make or break a round.
Beyond the course, Sapona boasts a welcoming atmosphere, known for its strong membership and camaraderie. In particular, the Friday night fish fry is a long-standing tradition, where members gather to recount their rounds and enjoy the convivial spirit that defines the club.
