SAN GABRIEL COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 San Gabriel, CA, USA
Designed by Norman Macbeth, Robert Trent Jones, Jr., William Francis Bell

San Gabriel Country Club whispers of old California grandeur, a testament to a bygone era of understated elegance in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley. Founded amidst the region's burgeoning citrus groves, the course unfolds across gently rolling parkland, a stark contrast to the increasingly urbanized landscape. The routing favors strategic play over brute force, rewarding golfers who can manage the subtle undulations and mature trees that frame each hole.
Designed by famed architect Norman Macbeth in the early 1900s, San Gabriel presents a classic Golden Age experience. While not known for hosting major championships, the course’s enduring charm lies in its meticulously preserved character and the sense of history that permeates every fairway. The course's modest length is deceptive; its defense is its well-guarded greens and the ever-present Santa Ana winds that can quickly transform a comfortable round into a true test.
San Gabriel's membership reflects a quiet, established community, many of whom have ties to the region's early families. It’s a place where traditions are honored and the pace of life seems to slow down. A unique aspect of San Gabriel's character is its dedication to preserving the original design intent, avoiding the relentless pursuit of added yardage that has become commonplace elsewhere.
Reviews
Sneaky good LA area Country Club. Beautiful view of San Gabriel mountains. Layout is pretty flat but good routing and interesting holes. 18th tee you hit over a fence and road. Loved the bunkering and the green complexes. Putting green and range are below average but enough to get warmed up. I enjoyed this course and the closing stretch is very challenging. I’d love to play it again
