Saltburn at Saltburn-by-the-Sea Golf Club

Saltburn-by-the-Sea Golf Club occupies clifftop land overlooking the North Sea on the Yorkshire coast, approximately fifteen miles east of Middlesbrough. The course was redesigned by James Braid in the early twentieth century, part of his prolific output across Britain during a period when the five-time Open Champion shaped or reshaped hundreds of layouts. The clifftop setting provides the defining character here, with the North York Moors forming a backdrop inland and the coastal views extending across the water toward Hartlepool and beyond.

The routing makes use of the natural elevation changes and clifftop terrain, with several holes playing along or near the cliff edge where the land drops away toward the beach below. The exposed position means wind is a frequent factor in club selection and strategy. The course measures relatively modest by modern standards but the combination of coastal breezes, undulating fairways, and Braid's characteristic bunkering maintains challenge across the card. Greens are typically firm and quick, reflecting the free-draining nature of the sandy subsoil common to links and clifftop courses.

Saltburn serves a membership drawn largely from the surrounding towns and villages of North Yorkshire and Teesside. The club maintains traditional values common to many British seaside courses established in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, with a clubhouse that reflects its heritage. The course remains relatively unknown outside the region but represents a characteristic example of Braid's work on coastal terrain and offers straightforward golf in a dramatic natural setting.
