SALEM HILLS GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Salem, OH, USA
Designed by Jack Kidwell

Salem Hills Golf & Country Club occupies rolling terrain in northeastern Ohio's Columbiana County, where the landscape transitions from the glaciated plains toward the Appalachian foothills. Jack Kidwell, a regional architect active primarily in Ohio and Pennsylvania during the latter half of the twentieth century, designed the course to work with the property's natural elevation changes and wooded corridors. The routing takes advantage of the hillside character that gives the club its name, with holes moving through varying elevations and stands of mature hardwoods.
The layout reflects Kidwell's practical approach to golf course design, emphasizing playability for a range of skill levels while incorporating strategic elements that reward course management. Fairways typically follow the land's contours, and greens are positioned to make use of natural slopes and surrounding features. Water comes into play on several holes, and bunkers are placed to define landing areas and protect green complexes without excessive penal design.
Salem Hills serves as a traditional country club for the Salem community, offering both golf and social amenities typical of mid-sized clubs in smaller Ohio cities. The course provides a familiar setting for local competition and member play throughout the season, functioning as a recreational and gathering place within this northeastern Ohio town situated roughly equidistant between Youngstown and Canton.
