SAHARA KUWAIT GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB
🇰🇼 Safat, Hawalli, KW
Designed by Peter Harradine

Sahara Kuwait Golf & Country Club occupies a desert setting in the Safat area of Hawalli Governorate, making it one of the few golf facilities in Kuwait. Swiss architect Peter Harradine designed the course, bringing his experience with desert and Middle Eastern layouts to a region where water scarcity and extreme heat present significant design and maintenance challenges. The course operates as a grass facility in an arid climate, requiring extensive irrigation infrastructure and careful agronomic management to sustain playing surfaces year-round.
The routing works with the flat desert terrain characteristic of Kuwait's coastal plain, where natural elevation changes are minimal. Harradine's design typically incorporates strategic bunkering, water features, and shaping to create definition and challenge on relatively level ground. The course serves both the expatriate community and local golfers in Kuwait, functioning as a recreational and social hub in a country with limited golf infrastructure.
Playing conditions vary considerably with the seasons, as summer temperatures regularly exceed 45 degrees Celsius, making golf practical primarily during cooler months from November through March. The club provides a traditional country club environment with dining and social facilities that cater to its membership base. As one of the primary golf venues in Kuwait, Sahara serves an important role in the regional golf community despite the inherent challenges of maintaining a grass course in one of the world's most arid environments.
Reviews
Most holes located inside a horse race track. Quite short but playing to a reduced par (par 67). Conditions mediocre in January. They have however done a decent job with keeping the design interesting and the ground game is available on almost every hole. Good use of sandy waste areas to minimise swathes of grass. With the demise of Kuwait International (governmental decision to remove their water) this is the only grassed course in the nation.
