WE-KO-PA GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Fort McDowell, AZ, USA
Designed by Ben Crenshaw, Bill Coore
We-Ko-Pa's Saguaro Course, carved into the rugged Sonoran Desert landscape northeast of Scottsdale, stands as a testament to classic design principles in a setting defined by its stark beauty. This is a thinking man's course, where strategic play trumps brute force; the generous fairways, often belying the challenge, demand precise angles into greens fiercely guarded by bunkers and the ever-present threat of the desert wash.
Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, celebrated for their minimalist approach, shaped Saguaro's routing to complement the natural contours of the land, creating a walking course that feels as though it has always existed within the folds of the McDowell Mountains. Though it hasn't played host to major championships, its purity and challenging yet fair layout have earned it quiet respect among discerning golfers, a haven for those who appreciate the game's intellectual side more than pyrotechnics.
Beyond the golf, We-Ko-Pa enjoys a relaxed atmosphere, a refreshing counterpoint to the sometimes-stuffy air of Scottsdale's more exclusive clubs. Tales circulate of friendly matches extending long after sunset, fueled by cold drinks and shared stories under the vast Arizona sky. While We-Ko-Pa might not be a household name, it cultivates a dedicated following.
Reviews
Even playing in 115 degree weather, Saguaro still stuns. A great course that rolls through the desert. In my opinion best course in the region. This course truly sets you in the desert. A must play when you’re in the Scottsdale area.
Not your typical target golf in the desert. Still plenty of trouble to get into.
Great walk and a cool design from C&C. Greens have some challenge, but most of the bite comes from tough tee shots (at least from back tees). Fun alternating stretches of short scoring holes followed by holes that protect par heavily. I’d say it’s a great match play course with your buddies, but maybe the layout gets a little far from traditional at points
You cannot go wrong with a Coore and Crenshaw design! So much fun, even in the offseason! Highly recommend the Frozen transfusion at the halfway house
As a disclaimer, I am not a big desert golf fan. That said, this far exceeded my expectations. The course is in really really good shape. I would play here again in a heartbeat. The views are incredible! The price is a bit steep, but I think that is just the Arizona tax.
The only Arizona course I like. (I have played zero privates there). Really good layout for desert golf but it’s still desert golf and not the Palm Springs kind.
Cool stuff in the desert that doesn’t feel like desert golf
Played in August, such a fun 36 day out there playing both.
Great Spot out in the desert.
Really great course. Must play if in Phoenix area
