Rye Golf Club occupies a coastal property in Rye, New York, along the shores of Long Island Sound in Westchester County. Devereux Emmet designed the course in the early twentieth century, part of his prolific body of work across the New York metropolitan area. Emmet, a contemporary of Charles Blair Macdonald and a founding member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, created layouts known for their strategic variety and adaptation to natural terrain. The course reflects the design principles of its era, with routing that takes advantage of the property's proximity to the water and the rolling topography characteristic of the region.
The layout features holes that play along and near the Sound, where wind and views become integral elements of the round. The terrain includes elevation changes and natural contours that Emmet incorporated into the design, creating a mix of hole types and shot requirements. Several holes offer glimpses or direct views of the water, and the routing moves through varied landscapes that include both open and tree-lined sections. The course has undergone modifications over the decades, as is common with designs of this vintage, but retains the fundamental character of Emmet's strategic approach.
Rye Golf Club operates as a private facility and has served as a venue for regional amateur competitions over its history. The club maintains a traditional membership structure typical of established Westchester County clubs, with a focus on golf and family activities. Its location within the New York suburbs places it among a concentration of historic courses from the Golden Age of American golf architecture.
Reviews
A Deveruex Emmet on the water, with a super unique design compared to the others I have played. Some really great scenery and some absolutely gorgeous homes surround the course. Challenging slope throughout the course makes it a fun play. Greens are quick and fairways are clean cut.
