ROYAL WESTMORELAND RESORT
🇧🇧 Westmoreland, St. James, BB
Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr.
Royal Westmoreland occupies an elevated plateau in the parish of St. James on Barbados's west coast, approximately 750 feet above sea level. Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed the course in the early 1990s as the centerpiece of a residential resort community. The routing takes advantage of the property's natural coral limestone topography, with fairways carved through mature mahogany trees and tropical vegetation. The elevation provides views across the Caribbean Sea and the island's interior, though the course itself sits inland from the coastline.
Jones incorporated the site's natural ravines and elevation changes into the design, creating a layout that moves through varying terrain. Several holes play across or along gullies cut into the limestone, and the property's mature tree canopy frames many fairways. The course measures over 7,000 yards from the championship tees, with Bermuda grass fairways and greens. Water features appear on multiple holes, and the bunkering follows Jones's characteristic style of large, sculptured sand complexes.
The club operates as a private facility within a resort and residential development, with membership tied to property ownership and resort guests granted playing privileges. The clubhouse sits at the highest point of the property and includes dining facilities that serve Caribbean and international cuisine. Royal Westmoreland has hosted professional events on the Caribbean golf circuit and remains one of the few championship-length courses in the eastern Caribbean island chain.
Reviews
I feel like I didn’t get to play Royal West Moreland in all its glory, there seemed to be a lot of work going on when we played and it was very butt out being out of season. It was an interesting round and the course wasn’t the main focus with my non golfer brother tagging along we were some what not focused on the game at hand. I could tell it had a lot of great potential and in peak it must be amazing, I love Barbados, a lot, and the Royal West Moreland estate is amazing. I will 100% go back here and give this a better fairer review, I think low 8s for my experience is fair it has to be lower than the other two I played in Barbados.
