ROYAL GOLF DE TANGER
🇲🇦 Tanger, Tangier-Tétouan, MA
Designed by C. K. Cotton, Frank Pennink, Peter Harradine
Royal Golf de Tanger occupies a hillside site overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic. The course was originally laid out by C.K. Cotton in 1917, making it one of the oldest golf facilities in Morocco. Subsequent modifications came from Frank Pennink and Peter Harradine, who refined the routing and updated features to accommodate modern play while preserving the layout's traditional character. The design works across rolling terrain with elevation changes that provide views toward both the city of Tangier and the water beyond.
The course measures modest by contemporary standards but presents a strategic test through its use of natural contours and prevailing coastal winds. Holes move through groves of eucalyptus and pine, with fairways that often require thoughtful placement rather than length. The greens tend to be small and subtly contoured, demanding accurate approach play. Several holes play along ridgelines or drop into valleys, creating variety in stance and club selection.
Royal Golf de Tanger serves as the home club for one of Morocco's oldest golfing communities, with a membership that has historically included both local and international players drawn to Tangier's cosmopolitan atmosphere. The clubhouse reflects the colonial-era origins of the facility, maintaining a traditional ambiance. The course has hosted regional amateur competitions and remains a regular stop for golfers exploring Morocco's northern courses, offering a quieter alternative to the more heavily trafficked resort layouts elsewhere in the country.
