ROYAL ÓBIDOS SPA & GOLF RESORT
🇵🇹 Óbidos, Estremadura e Ribatejo, PT
Designed by Severiano Ballesteros
Royal Óbidos sits in the rolling countryside of western Portugal, roughly an hour north of Lisbon and a few kilometers inland from the Atlantic coast. Designed by Severiano Ballesteros and opened in 2012, the course occupies terrain that transitions from relatively flat agricultural land to more undulating ground, with views toward the medieval hilltop town of Óbidos and the surrounding Estremadura region. The layout reflects Ballesteros's design philosophy of strategic variety and playability across different skill levels.
The routing takes advantage of the natural contours and incorporates water features on several holes, with lakes coming into play particularly on the inward nine. Ballesteros shaped generous fairways but defended greens with pronounced contouring and bunker complexes that reward precise approach play. The course measures over 6,000 meters from the championship tees and offers multiple tee options to accommodate resort play. Pine trees, olive groves, and native vegetation frame many holes, creating definition without excessive confinement.
Royal Óbidos functions as the centerpiece of a golf resort that includes spa facilities and residential development. The property caters to both Portuguese members and international visitors drawn to the region's combination of golf, historic sites, and proximity to beach towns along the Silver Coast. The course has hosted professional events on the Portuguese golf calendar, though it remains primarily a resort and membership venue rather than a major championship site.
