ROYAL KIEV GOLF CLUB
🇺🇦 Motyzhin, Zhytomyr, UA
Designed by Martin Hawtree
Royal Kiev Golf Club occupies a forested site near Motyzhin in the Zhytomyr region, approximately forty kilometers west of Kyiv. Designed by British architect Martin Hawtree and opened in 2008, the course represents one of the first championship-standard layouts built in Ukraine following independence. Hawtree, known for links restoration work in the British Isles and parkland designs across Europe, routed eighteen holes through mature pine and birch woodland, incorporating natural elevation changes and existing tree corridors into the playing corridors.
The layout moves through varied terrain, with several holes playing along ridgelines and others descending into lower-lying areas among the trees. Water features appear on multiple holes, and the design emphasizes strategic bunkering and green complexes that reward precision over distance. The forested setting provides definition and seclusion to individual holes while creating a parkland character distinct from the open landscapes typical of links golf.
Royal Kiev has hosted Ukrainian national championships and served as a venue for developing competitive golf in the country. The club includes practice facilities and a clubhouse designed to accommodate both members and visiting golfers. The course remains one of the few full-length championship layouts in Ukraine and reflects the country's gradual integration into European golf networks during the early twenty-first century.
