KAANAPALI GOLF COURSES
🇺🇸 Lahaina, HI, USA
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr.
The Royal Kaanapali Course, a fixture of the Kaanapali landscape since the early 1960s, is where legends like Palmer, Player, and Trevino once battled for Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf supremacy. Its gently rolling fairways, characteristic of its era, belie a design that favors the strategic player over sheer power. The course meanders through the foothills of the West Maui Mountains, rewarding thoughtful approaches and precise iron play, especially on the greens, which are notoriously challenging to read.
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., the Royal Kaanapali was conceived to provide a resort-style experience with a touch of championship pedigree. While never hosting a major championship, it has consistently been a popular venue for regional and amateur events, attracting a loyal following of both vacationers and local players. The course underwent a renovation by architect Robin Nelson in the early 2000’s.
Kaanapali’s allure extends beyond the golf itself. Many come for the panoramic ocean views from nearly every hole, a constant reminder of the course's privileged location. After the round, golfers congregate at the clubhouse, which is known for its mai tais and pupus, and the social interaction that is so central to the Kaanapali experience.
