Royal Colwood at Royal Colwood Golf Club

Royal Colwood Golf Club occupies a wooded property in the Victoria suburb of Colwood, roughly ten kilometers west of the city center on Vancouver Island. The course was designed by Vernon Macan and opened in 1913, making it one of the oldest clubs in British Columbia. Macan, a Scottish-born architect who worked extensively in the Pacific Northwest during the early twentieth century, routed the layout through stands of Douglas fir, cedar, and arbutus trees that define the playing corridors and create a distinctly forested character. The club received its "Royal" designation in 1931, one of only a handful of Canadian courses to carry the prefix.

The routing moves across gently rolling terrain with modest elevation changes. Tree-lined fairways demand accuracy from the tee, and the relatively compact property means strategic positioning is often more valuable than distance. The greens are typically small to mid-sized, and the bunkering reflects the restrained style of early Canadian course architecture. Several holes play along or across natural drainage features that add interest to approach shots.

Royal Colwood has hosted numerous provincial championships and regional amateur events over the decades, serving as an important competitive venue for Vancouver Island golf. The club maintains a traditional membership culture, and the clubhouse overlooks the course from an elevated position near the property's center. The course remains largely true to Macan's original design intent, with tree growth over the past century reinforcing the premium on accuracy and course management.
