ROYAL CINQUE PORTS GOLF CLUB
🏴 Deal, Kent, England
Designed by Donald Steel, Henry Cotton, Henry Hunter, James Braid, Sir Guy Campbell

Royal Cinque Ports occupies a narrow strip of linksland between the town of Deal and the sea on England's southeast coast. The club was founded in 1892, with the original layout shaped by the members themselves before various architects contributed refinements over subsequent decades. James Braid made alterations in the 1920s, Henry Cotton worked on the course in the 1940s, and Sir Guy Campbell was involved in post-war restoration work. More recently, Donald Steel has advised on course changes. The links runs out and back along the shore, with the outward nine heading south and the return nine coming back north.
The course sits on relatively flat duneland, though the ground features enough movement and natural contours to create strategic interest. The proximity to the sea means wind is a constant factor, and the firm, fast conditions typical of British links golf reward ground game and careful club selection. Several holes play directly along the coastline, while others weave through the dunes slightly inland. The bunkering is traditional in style, and the greens are generally firm and quick.
Royal Cinque Ports hosted The Open Championship twice, in 1909 and 1920, though its location and the logistical challenges of the site have kept it from the modern championship rota. The club maintains a traditional members' culture and remains a respected test of links golf. It sits near Royal St George's in Sandwich, forming part of the notable concentration of championship links courses in Kent.
