ROYAL AUCKLAND GOLF CLUB
🇳🇿 Auckland, Auckland, NZ
Designed by C.H. Redhead, D.G. Souter, Fred Hood, Peter Thomson

Royal Auckland Golf Club, established in 1894, occupies a distinctive site on the Middlemore Peninsula in South Auckland. The course has evolved through contributions from several architects over more than a century. Fred Hood shaped the early layout, while D.G. Souter and C.H. Redhead made subsequent modifications. Australian champion Peter Thomson, who also worked as a course architect, redesigned the layout in the 1970s, creating much of the routing that exists today.
The peninsula setting provides natural boundaries with Manukau Harbour visible from several holes. The terrain features gentle to moderate elevation changes rather than dramatic topography, with mature trees lining many fairways. Thomson's design emphasizes strategic bunkering and green complexes that reward precise approach play. The layout requires careful course management, as the relatively compact property demands accuracy over distance on many holes.
Royal Auckland has hosted numerous New Zealand national championships and serves as one of the country's premier tournament venues. The club maintains traditional membership standards and operates as a private facility. The course represents an important part of New Zealand golf history, having served the Auckland golfing community for well over a century while adapting to modern championship standards through its various redesigns.
