ROLLING ROAD GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Catonsville, MD, USA
Designed by Willie Park Jr.
Rolling Road Golf Club, nestled in the rolling hills of Catonsville, Maryland, carries the echoes of a bygone era, a testament to unpretentious, accessible golf in a region known for its more lauded layouts.
The parkland course, initially shaped in the mid-20th century, presents a walkable, player-friendly experience. While the fairways aren't excessively long, subtle doglegs and mature trees, framing many of the holes, reward strategic placement rather than brute force. It’s a course where a well-placed draw can be your best friend off the tee. The greens, though not dramatically contoured, demand attention. The bentgrass, now in mature condition, asks for an attentive touch.
While Rolling Road hasn't played host to national championships, its charm lies in its dedication to its local community. It’s a place where generations have learned the game, and where club championships hold as much significance as any event. The club embodies the spirit of amateur golf, fostering a welcoming environment where the focus is on the camaraderie of the game.
And while you might not find it on many "must-play" lists, you will find perhaps the area's best crab cake sandwich. After your round, pull up a seat at the bar, order a local brew and the "crabby patty," as it's so affectionally called, and share a laugh with the regulars. At Rolling Road, the unwritten rule is that the stories are always better than the scores.
