MONTCLAIR GOLF CLUB AT ROCK SPRING
🇺🇸 West Orange, NJ, USA
Designed by Charles Banks, Seth Raynor

Rock Spring at Montclair Golf Club is where classic golf architecture in the hills of West Orange, NJ, quietly endures. Its existence—and that of its enduring membership—serves as a vibrant homage to the Golden Age.
Designed by Walter Travis, Rock Spring offers a demanding, yet fair, test shaped by the rolling, forested terrain. While not overly long by modern standards, the course rewards strategic play and precise iron work. Its generous fairways are subtly contoured, leading to deceptively challenging green complexes. Players often find themselves navigating doglegs and thoughtfully placed bunkers requiring keen course management.
While Montclair as a whole has hosted numerous state and regional amateur events, Rock Spring maintains a lower profile. Yet, its charm lies in this understated elegance and the deep-rooted camaraderie among its members. The stories whispered around the clubhouse often involve spirited matches and post-round gatherings, usually with talk about its famous mile markers from New York City. A tight-knit community thrives here, bound by a shared appreciation for the game's traditions and the unique character of this enduring course.
Reviews
So nice that there’s a public Raynor/Banks close to the city. Lived up to expectations
Public Raynor/Bank. Bones are there. Needs bunker work.
Great layout with many template holes. Similar to most golf in NJ, overpriced
An old Banks layout that has gone downhill since it went public. The course just can’t hold up to the modern game anymore playing about 6,500 from the tips. Greens are slow and bumpy.
