RIVER COURSE OF VIRGINIA TECH
🇺🇸 Radford, VA, USA
Designed by Pete Dye
River Course at Virginia Tech, cradled in the New River Valley, isn't just a collegiate course; it's a proving ground for future generations of Hokies, steeped in the tradition of Virginia Tech athletics. The course is a test of skill and a rite of passage for any golfer associated with the university.
Carved from rolling farmland, the River Course presents a modern design that prioritizes risk-reward scenarios and strategic play over brute power. The architect, has crafted a layout defined by undulating fairways, subtly contoured greens, and the ever-present challenge of the New River itself, which meanders through several holes. Expect demanding approach shots, doglegs that favor a strategic fade, and a course that punishes imprecision around the greens.
While it hasn't hosted major professional events, the River Course is the annual home of the Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational, a highly competitive collegiate tournament that draws top talent from across the nation. This event has seen many future PGA Tour players test their skills on its demanding layout.
The River Course is known for its strong collegiate membership and focus on camaraderie amongst its players. A particularly enjoyable experience, and one that resonates with members, is a post round beverage at the clubhouse watching the sun set over the Blacksburg Mountains.
Reviews
What a joy it must be for VT students to have access to such an amazing track. Pete Dye flexes his bunkering expertise right from the jump on this design with numerous unique shaped/angled bunkers that look intimating from the tee but are tame in reality. The routing has constant peaks of the river and a number of holes on the front and back that are right along the bank. An indicator of a well designed course is the variety of par 4s and while not as stellar as some of his other designs they still shine here. The par 3s are a good blend and the par 5s are extremely memorable. While the land is relatively flat the routing never feels bland or boring. This is due to the amazing green complexes this course possesses. Lots of contouring paired with strategic collection areas make a tidy short game crucial for scoring. The stretch of 7,8,9 is the best on the property and is Dye at his best. The clubhouse, while not lavish, has the best non-ocean based view I’ve seen as it towers over the river. While the flat land prevents this from being a true master piece the only other downside is a horrendous practice area. The range is awful and the putting green is just as bad. Don’t bother using these and instead enjoy what is a wonderful course.
Beautiful views along the river on links that are challenging but incredibly rewarding. Most enjoyable course to walk. The balance of holes and the flow between them keeps you at the top of your game.
