River at RTJ Golf Trail at Hampton Cove

The River Course at Hampton Cove is one of three championship layouts that anchor this Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail facility in the rolling terrain of northern Alabama, near Huntsville. Opened in 1992 as part of Alabama's ambitious public golf initiative, the course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. during the latter phase of his career. The Trail project aimed to create tournament-quality public golf across the state, and Jones brought his signature design philosophy to Hampton Cove: strategic bunkering, large undulating greens, multiple tee boxes to accommodate all skill levels, and water hazards that force decision-making throughout the round.

The River Course occupies varied terrain along the Flint River valley, moving through wooded corridors and more open stretches where water comes into play. Jones routed holes to take advantage of elevation changes and natural features, creating a layout that demands both length and accuracy. The course measures over 7,600 yards from the championship tees, reflecting Jones's belief that courses should test accomplished players while remaining playable for higher handicappers from forward tees. Several holes play along or across water, and the green complexes feature the bold contouring characteristic of Jones's work.

Hampton Cove serves as a public facility within the RTJ Golf Trail network, which has hosted numerous regional amateur championships and qualifiers since its opening. The complex includes practice facilities and a clubhouse that serves all three courses on the property.
