KINGSMILL COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Williamsburg, VA, USA
Designed by Pete Dye
River at Kingsmill is where the ghosts of Hogan and Snead still stalk the fairways, a course touched by legends who shaped not just the game, but the very contours of this storied Virginia landscape. Carved into the bluffs overlooking the James River near Williamsburg, the River course presents a modern challenge draped across terrain that hints at its historical prominence.
Designed by Pete Dye, with later refinements by his son P.B. Dye, the River course is not a gentle stroll. It demands strategic shot-making and rewards bravery, with devilish undulations and strategically placed bunkers that punish the faint of heart. The routing is memorable, and favors players who can hit the ball left to right, with doglegs that demand you work the ball through the dogwoods and pines.
The River course has borne witness to professional competition, most notably hosting a PGA Tour event for several years. While not currently a fixture on the major tour circuit, the memories of those championship moments linger, etched into the very fabric of the course.
The membership at Kingsmill prize camaraderie and spirited competition, bound by a shared love of the game and the beauty of this unique setting. And while the golf may be the main attraction, the Kingsmill burger often provides a post round treat, a fitting end to a day spent in pursuit of par on these hallowed grounds.
Reviews
Hard course, pretty views
Played in December 2024. Need to return under warmer conditions. There was a foursome of older times behind us who were playing the holes as a chip and putt course. They were running us down on the final holes of the back nine.
