RIO HONDO GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Downey, CA, USA
Designed by John Duncan Dunn
Rio Hondo Golf Club occupies a flat parcel in Downey, a city in southeastern Los Angeles County situated between the San Gabriel and Los Angeles rivers. The course was designed by John Duncan Dunn, a Scottish-born architect who worked extensively in California during the early twentieth century. Dunn is known for several courses in the Los Angeles area, including contributions to Griffith Park and other municipal layouts, and his work typically reflects straightforward routing adapted to the available terrain.
The course sits on relatively level ground characteristic of the Los Angeles basin's floodplain topography. Without significant natural elevation change, the design relies on strategic bunkering, tree placement, and green contouring to create interest and challenge. The layout likely features mature trees that frame fairways and define playing corridors, a common element in Southern California courses of this vintage that have matured over decades.
Rio Hondo serves as a public facility, providing accessible golf in a densely populated suburban area where open space is limited. The club operates within the broader network of municipal and daily-fee courses that accommodate the region's substantial golfing population. Like many urban courses in greater Los Angeles, it balances recreational play with the practical demands of high traffic and year-round operation under the mild Mediterranean climate that defines Southern California golf.
Reviews
i recomend Rio Hondo to anyone visiting on the east side of LA. It's a treat of a muni. they'll never host a US Open, but you will have fun. Be careful, however, as I've seen a few fights there.
