RIO BRAVO COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Bakersfield, CA, USA
Designed by Robert Muir Graves

Rio Bravo Country Club sits in the eastern reaches of Bakersfield, where the San Joaquin Valley begins its gradual rise toward the Sierra Nevada foothills. Robert Muir Graves designed the course, which opened in the late 1960s as part of a residential development that brought country club amenities to this growing section of California's Central Valley. Graves, a prolific California architect of the mid-twentieth century, worked extensively throughout the state and was known for routing courses that balanced playability for members with strategic interest.
The layout occupies relatively flat valley terrain typical of the region, with mature tree plantings—largely introduced species suited to the valley's hot, dry summers—defining fairway corridors and framing holes. Water features appear on several holes, providing both visual definition and strategic challenge in a landscape that otherwise lacks natural elevation change. The design reflects the era's emphasis on parkland-style golf in residential settings, with generous fairways and greens sized to accommodate daily member play.
Rio Bravo functions primarily as a private member club serving Bakersfield's east side community. The course hosts regular club competitions and serves as a venue for local amateur events, fitting the traditional role of a regional country club in California's interior. The facility includes the standard amenities expected of clubs from this period—practice areas, swimming facilities, and dining spaces that anchor the social life of the membership.
Reviews
Former private club now semi private. Challenging design in the hills of Bakersfield. One of the longest par 5’s I’ve ever played. New ownership putting money into the course. Definitely worth playing if in the area and the clubhouse scene is supposed to be hopping by
