REYNOLDS PARK GOLF COURSE
🇺🇸 Winston-Salem, NC, USA
Designed by Ed Seay, Ellis Maples, Perry Maxwell
Reynolds Park occupies a wooded hillside site in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, with a design history that reflects multiple phases of development. The course traces its origins to Perry Maxwell, the renowned architect known for his work at Prairie Dunes and Southern Hills, who laid out the original routing in the 1940s. Ellis Maples, a prolific North Carolina designer responsible for numerous courses across the state, later contributed to the layout. Ed Seay, who worked extensively with Arnold Palmer's design firm, also had a hand in shaping the course over subsequent decades.
The routing moves through rolling terrain characteristic of the North Carolina Piedmont, with elevation changes that create variety in shot values and playing angles. Mature hardwoods line many fairways, and the property's natural contours influence both strategy and aesthetics. The design incorporates Maxwell's preference for ground-game options and strategic bunkering, though later modifications have adapted the course to contemporary playing standards and maintenance practices.
Reynolds Park serves as a municipal facility, providing public access golf in Winston-Salem's park system. The course accommodates a range of skill levels while maintaining enough length and challenge for competitive play. Its location within the city limits makes it a practical option for local golfers, and its tree-lined character and topographical movement distinguish it from flatter layouts in the region. The combination of Maxwell's foundational design principles and subsequent refinements by Maples and Seay gives the course a layered architectural identity reflective of mid-twentieth-century American public golf course development.
Reviews
“The People’s Old Town” is a gem by Perry Maxwell. The city doesn’t realize what they have in RP. It’s on a great piece of land and has an excellent routing. A prime candidate for a restoration to bring it up to par.
