COUNTRY CLUB OF DETROIT
🇺🇸 Grosse Pointe Farms, MI, USA
Designed by C. H. Alison, Harry S. Colt, Robert Trent Jones Sr., Robert Trent Jones, Jr., Tom Doak

The Country Club of Detroit occupies a historic property in Grosse Pointe Farms along the shores of Lake St. Clair. The club's golf course reflects contributions from multiple distinguished architects across nearly a century. Harry Colt and Charles Alison designed the original layout in the 1920s, establishing a routing that took advantage of the lakeside terrain and mature trees characteristic of the Detroit area's established residential landscape. Robert Trent Jones Sr. made modifications in the post-war era, followed by work from his son, Robert Trent Jones Jr., in subsequent decades.
More recently, Tom Doak led a restoration and renovation effort aimed at recapturing elements of the Colt-Alison design intent while adapting the course to modern playing standards. The layout features relatively gentle terrain with strategic bunkering, tree-lined fairways, and greens that reflect the Golden Age emphasis on angles and approach shot variety. The proximity to Lake St. Clair influences both the setting and occasional playing conditions.
The club has long served as a prominent fixture in the Detroit area's social and golf community, with membership drawn from the region's established families and business leaders. The clubhouse and grounds maintain the traditional character typical of early twentieth-century American country clubs. While not a frequent tournament venue on the national stage, the course has hosted regional amateur competitions and remains a well-regarded private club layout in southeastern Michigan.
