FOXFIRE RESORT & GOLF
🇺🇸 Foxfire Village, NC, USA
Designed by Gene Hamm
Red Fox is one of two courses at Foxfire Resort & Golf in Foxfire Village, a residential community in the Sandhills region of North Carolina. Designed by Gene Hamm and opened in the early 1970s, the course reflects the era's approach to resort golf in this part of the state, where sandy soils and native pines create natural conditions for the game. Hamm, a regional architect active across the Carolinas during this period, routed the course through rolling terrain characteristic of the Sandhills, incorporating elevation changes and stands of longleaf pine.
The layout takes advantage of the property's natural contours, with holes that move through wooded corridors and open to broader landing areas. Water comes into play on several holes, and the bunkering follows traditional patterns common to courses of its vintage. The greens vary in size and contour, requiring accurate approach play. As a resort amenity, Red Fox serves both members of the Foxfire community and visiting golfers, functioning as a complement to the property's other course, Grey Fox.
Foxfire Village developed as a retirement and second-home destination in Moore County, an area known for its concentration of golf courses and proximity to Pinehurst. Red Fox provides a straightforward test of golf in a quiet, wooded setting typical of Sandhills layouts from the 1970s, without the championship length or tournament pedigree of the region's more prominent designs.
