TIMBER POINT GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Great River, NY, USA
Designed by Harry S. Colt, C. H. Alison
Timber Point Golf Club's Red Course occupies a distinctive peninsula site on the south shore of Long Island, jutting into the Great South Bay near Great River. Designed by Harry Colt and Charles Alison in the late 1920s, the course represents one of the few American works by this celebrated British partnership, which also produced the nearby Blue Course at the same facility. The property was developed as a public facility by the Town of Islip, making championship-caliber design accessible to a broader golfing audience than most Colt-Alison collaborations.
The routing takes full advantage of the waterfront setting, with several holes playing along or near the bay shoreline. The terrain features gentle rolls rather than dramatic elevation change, typical of Long Island's coastal topography, but the architects created strategic interest through thoughtful bunkering, green contours, and the prevailing winds off the water. The course measures over 6,700 yards from the back tees and presents a traditional parkland character with mature trees framing many holes.
Timber Point has served as a venue for regional amateur competitions and qualifiers over the decades, benefiting from its length and the challenge posed by coastal winds. The facility operates as a public course, maintaining the democratic spirit of its original development while preserving the architectural integrity of a design from golf's golden age. The Red Course shares the property with the Blue Course, together forming one of Long Island's more historically significant public golf destinations.
