DISMAL RIVER GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Mullen, NE, USA
Designed by Tom Doak

Dismal River Golf Club's Red Course occupies remote sandhills terrain in north-central Nebraska, designed by Tom Doak and opened in 2004. The property sits within the Nebraska Sandhills, a vast region of grass-stabilized dunes that creates naturally rolling topography unlike most American golf landscapes. Doak routed the course to follow the existing landforms, with minimal earthmoving, allowing the native contours and native grasses to define the playing corridors. The design philosophy emphasizes ground game options and wide fairways that encourage varied approach angles.
The course plays across open, windswept terrain with few trees, giving it a links-like character despite its inland location. Fescue grasses cover the playing surfaces and surrounds, reinforcing the minimalist aesthetic. Greens are relatively large with subtle internal contours, and many holes offer multiple routes from tee to green depending on wind and ground conditions. The remote setting—hours from major population centers—contributes to a sense of isolation and focus on pure golf.
Dismal River operates as a private club with lodging on-site, attracting members and guests willing to travel for the distinctive sandhills golf experience. The property later added a second course, the White Course by Jack Nicklaus, expanding the club's offerings. The Red Course has appeared on various architectural rankings and is noted among those interested in naturalistic, minimalist design. The club's dining and accommodations support multi-day visits in an otherwise sparsely populated region.
Reviews
Having spent a long time searching for a National Membership I settled on Dismal River Club in Mullen, Nebraska. While Dismal River lacks the illustrious reputation of its neighbor Sand Hills or Tom Doak’s other course in the area, Ballyneal, it boasts two excellent golf courses - the original Jack Nicklaus White Course and the Tom Doak Red Course - first class accommodation and food and beverage and a wonderfully appointed club house with perhaps the best fire pit in golf. The front nine of the Red Course sits in the sand dunes that characterize the area while the back meanders down into the river valley. It feels that Doak designed the Red as an antidote to the more bruising White. The playing corridors are wide with a number of shared fairways, depending on the wind and choice of tees a number of the par 4s are drivable and the par 5s reachable with two well struck shots. While there are birdies to be had, the course is not without its teeth. The par 4 second is a superb golf hole where the drive must avoid a cavernous bunker leaving a mid iron to an elevated green and the par 3 fifth will require a wood for most players. Is the Red as masterful a golf course as Tom Doak created at Ballyneal? No. But is it more fun? I think so.
What a great Doak course. Walkable and so scenic closer to the river. Loved the routing and complaints about the greens are silly.
