Rancho Bernardo at The Country Club of Rancho Bernardo

The Country Club of Rancho Bernardo features two distinct eighteen-hole layouts in the northern San Diego community of Rancho Bernardo, a master-planned suburban area developed in the 1960s. William F. Bell designed the original West Course in 1962, while Ted Robinson added the East Course in 1973. Both courses occupy rolling terrain characteristic of Southern California's inland valleys, with mature tree-lined fairways and water features integrated into the routing.

Bell, a prolific California architect whose work includes Torrey Pines South, created a layout that reflects the design sensibilities of the early 1960s, with strategic bunkering and elevation changes that take advantage of the natural contours. Robinson, known for incorporating water hazards and landscaping into his designs throughout California and the Southwest, brought a different aesthetic to the East Course with more pronounced water elements and a parkland character that contrasts with Bell's earlier work.

The club operates as a private facility serving the Rancho Bernardo residential community. The courses provide year-round golf in San Diego County's temperate climate, with conditions that favor Bermuda grass fairways and bent grass greens. The setting offers views of the surrounding hills and valleys that define this inland region, positioned between the Pacific coast and the higher elevations to the east. Both layouts accommodate a range of skill levels while maintaining the traditional design principles of their respective architects and eras.
