HOTEL QUINTA DA MARINHA RESORT
🇵🇹 Cascais, Lisboa e Setúbal, PT
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr.
Quinta da Marinha occupies a distinctive coastal setting in Cascais, roughly thirty kilometers west of Lisbon along Portugal's Atlantic shore. Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed the course in 1984, routing it through terrain that combines pine forest with open stretches influenced by ocean winds. The layout sits within the broader Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, where the maritime climate and sandy soil create conditions somewhat reminiscent of links golf, though the property retains considerable tree cover in its interior sections.
The course measures just over 6,000 meters from the back tees and features the strategic design principles characteristic of Trent Jones's work: elevated greens, substantial bunkering, and water hazards that require careful club selection. Several holes play through corridors of umbrella pine, while others open to views of the Atlantic and expose players to coastal breezes that can significantly affect shot-making. The routing takes advantage of moderate elevation changes, with greens often positioned to demand accurate approach play.
Quinta da Marinha operates as part of a resort property that includes hotel accommodations and residential development. The course has hosted professional events on the European Challenge Tour and serves as a venue for Portuguese national championships. Its proximity to Cascais and Lisbon makes it accessible for both resort guests and visiting golfers exploring the Estoril coast, an area that includes several other established courses. The facility maintains year-round playability due to the region's temperate climate.
Reviews
a resort course that requires consistent driving. knowing the greens and tough pin positions must make it really fun to play approach shots. i had a hard time with how the greens are shaped. 5 par 5s and 7 par 3s is nuts, never played two par 5s in a row but the final stretch of holes is much more relaxing, which starts with a beatiful par 4 hole 13.
