THE QUARRY AT GIANTS RIDGE
🇺🇸 Biwabik, MN, USA
Designed by Jeff Brauer
The Quarry, hewn from the iron-rich landscape of Giants Ridge in northern Minnesota, stands as a testament to the region's mining heritage. Carved from the remnants of a former iron ore mine, the course showcases a rugged beauty that is rare even amongst the most picturesque locations.
Architect Jeffrey Brauer masterfully integrated the site's dramatic elevation changes and exposed rock formations, creating a distinctly modern layout. Wide fairways invite aggressive play off the tee, but the course's true defense lies in its demanding approach shots to undulating greens guarded by strategically placed bunkers and the ever-present threat of the surrounding wilderness. Errant shots are often penalized severely, and the course favors those who can strategically plot their way around the layout, favoring those who have a consistent fade.
While The Quarry hasn’t hosted major professional championships, it serves as a popular destination for golfers in the Upper Midwest. The club maintains a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, drawing a diverse membership who appreciate the course's challenging design and the region's stunning natural beauty. After a round, many members will gather on the clubhouse patio, enjoying the panoramic views and engaging in friendly banter about the day's triumphs and travails.
Reviews
A true gem in northern MN that you won’t accidentally stumble across. Its remoteness is what makes it great, as you really get to experience what makes the northwoods so special. Fairways are wide but if you miss them your ball is gone. Greens are borderline gimmicky with the undulation, just enjoy the northwoods experience without a house (and usually without another hole or person) in sight and accept it. For $130 it might be the best value in golf. Conditions are always pristine and staff is always enjoyable.
If you go to a resort and don’t give a damn about any of the amenities then Giant’s Ridge and The Quarry are an insane value play and one of my favorites in the state. I love this course with all my heart. It was one of my first road trip courses and that maybe sways my opinion a bit but it is truly a masterpiece. Is it perfect no? There are a few flaws and it is a tad bit gimmicky but damn I love it.
+Expansive property cut into the wilderness +Holes require a mix of strategies -Dining is limited, but nice view of the lake
Quarry is easily the best public in Minnesota, and a great value as well. Lots of great holes in the first 16 but comes to a screeching halt across the road in 17 and 18.
