GREAT GORGE COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 McAfee, NJ, USA
Designed by George Fazio

Quarry at Great Gorge, carved into the rugged landscape of Vernon Township, is a test of golf that demands respect. While not steeped in championship lore, its demanding layout and dramatic elevation changes offer a stern examination of a golfer's game.
Architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. worked with the natural terrain creating a course that winds through the property, offering blind shots and challenging green complexes. Fairways are moderately wide, providing some forgiveness off the tee, but often feed into strategically placed bunkers and thick rough, punishing errant approaches. Golfers must be strategic about angles, and playing to certain areas of the fairway is key, making the course strategic, rather than long.
Quarry at Great Gorge remains a fixture of Northern New Jersey golf, offering a challenging and scenic round for local golfers who relish the difficulty of the course. After a round, many gather at the clubhouse restaurant, affectionately nicknamed 'The 19th Hole,' for post-game analysis, reflecting on the challenges conquered and those that got away.
