QUAKER RIDGE GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Scarsdale, NY, USA
Designed by A .W. Tillinghast
Quaker Ridge is where metropolitan refinement meets a relentlessly challenging golf course, a place where titans of industry and legends of the game have walked the fairways since its inception. Carved into the rolling hills of Scarsdale, New York, this classic Golden Age design, born from the vision of A.W. Tillinghast, presents a stern test that favors strategic prowess over brute force. The course offers generous landing areas with approaches often requiring skillful negotiation of strategically placed bunkers guarding the putting surfaces.
Tillinghast's masterpiece has been respectfully updated over the years, with subtle enhancements by Rees Jones ensuring the course remains relevant for the modern game. Quaker Ridge demands intelligent shot-making and a thoughtful approach, especially on the famed "Amen Corner" of holes 13, 14 and 15.
Quaker Ridge has hosted the 1997 Walker Cup and the 2018 Curtis Cup, solidifying its position as a respected venue for amateur competition. While it might not command the international spotlight as frequently as some of its contemporaries, its reputation among discerning golfers remains firmly intact.
Known for its understated elegance, the club fostered a membership historically drawn from New York's business elite and passionate golfers, bound by a shared appreciation for the traditions of the game and the club's unwavering commitment to excellence. Many a business deal and important decision, it is said, was brokered on its back nine followed by a well earned Manhattan in the clubhouse.
Reviews
Top tier conditioning and interesting design. Precision beats power here.
A ball strikers paradise on a true par 70. The routing is an outside/inside, similar to HCEG, here, the front nine is counterclockwise. Centerline obstacles, trees, a meandering creek, and typical Westchester County terrain all factor into the routing. Both par 5’s are reachable, but require a precise second shot to score. The par 3’s, are solid, with 9 & 10 adding a unique feature. The soul of Quaker Ridge are the par 4’s. Challenging to many, but of various lengths and movement of direction. A signature of Tillinghast, are the approach shots. It is where he asks the most questions of the golfer. Can you find the surface w accuracy and distance control? If you cannot, it will be a long day for you.
One of my favorite courses I’ve played. Thought the par 4’s were some of the best Ive played for variety and interest. Had caddies one was excellent the other just average. My buddy got one of the worst putt reads I’ve ever seen but other than that pretty solid. Great conditions a great day on a classic East Coast Tillinghast.
The bunkers - and the conditions of the bunkers - are among the best I’ve ever seen. Great golf course, quite challenging, and some of the best food in golf. Wonderful place.
Bunkering Masterclass. Awesome layout and trick course to get around. Tucked away and very calm. Great conditions
