QUAIL HOLLOW COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Charlotte, NC, USA
Designed by Arnold Palmer, Ed Seay, George Cobb, Tom Fazio

Quail Hollow, carved into the rolling landscape north of Charlotte, is a modern monument to championship golf. A stern test born from the post-war boom, the course sits on terrain more akin to gentle Piedmont foothills than dramatic topography. What appears benign on a scorecard quickly reveals itself through clever bunkering, strategically placed water hazards, and subtly contoured greens that reward precision and punish indecision.
Originally designed by George Cobb in 1961, Quail Hollow has undergone significant enhancements, most notably by Arnold Palmer in 1986 and later by Tom Fazio, who reshaped the course into its current formidable configuration. It's a layout that favors power off the tee, particularly on the longer par-4s, but also demands strategic acumen around the greens. The closing stretch, famously known as the "Green Mile", is considered one of the most demanding in professional golf, capable of deciding tournaments with a single errant swing.
Quail Hollow is a regular stop on the PGA Tour, hosting the Wells Fargo Championship annually and previously the 2017 PGA Championship and the 2022 Presidents Cup. While it may not possess the storied history of some of the game’s Golden Age layouts, its consistent presence on the professional stage has solidified its reputation as a course that identifies the game's best ball strikers and clutch putters.
Beyond the championship pedigree, Quail Hollow cultivates a club culture rooted in Southern hospitality and a deep appreciation for the game. It is said that many a deal has been brokered over a round, and the club's social calendar is as active as its competitive schedule. And after a long day on the course, members often gather for a cold beverage and conversation, cementing the bonds that define the Quail Hollow experience.
Reviews
Everything you could ask for in a golf club. Great service, as pure conditions as you could imagine, a huge emphasis on pace of play, and a pimento cheese sandwich rivaling that one random course in Georgia (can’t remember the name). World class private golf facility. I’ve played here a few times now (one being right before the presidents cup), and it never ceases to amaze me.
Special memories and circumstance probably bump my rating up a bit, but I think QHC gets a bad rap because we see it too much on TV. Special course with rich history, very challenging off the tee, and commands respect around the greens. Yes, some weak holes but none that are remotely offensive. I firmly believe QHC is a fantastic course and an excellent championship test, even if it doesn’t present itself well on the broadcast.
